Scattered throughout Ogunquit are plaques and benches placed in memory of people who loved this town — individuals whose connection to Ogunquit was personal, lasting, and deeply felt. Some were year-round residents, some summer people, some devoted returners who came back again and again to the same streets, views, shops, inns, and shoreline paths. These markers, though not gathered in one formal memorial setting, form a quiet network of remembrance across the town. This page is meant to bring them together.
It is also the home for Virtual Memorials: remembrances for loved ones whose memory belongs in Ogunquit even if no physical plaque, bench, or inscription exists here for them. Not every family had the means or occasion to place a marker, but love of place is no less real for that. Ogunquit Memorial Library
The Ogunquit Memorial Library grew from the love that George and Nannie Conarroe felt for Ogunquit, where they summered for many years. After George's death, Nannie commissioned the library as a lasting memorial and gift to the town, contributing 1,500 books and establishing a trust fund to support its future. Built in 1897 by York contractor Edward B. Blaisdell, the fieldstone building opened to the public in June 1898. Philadelphia architect Charles M. Burns designed it in the H. H. Richardson Romanesque style, whose rugged stonework and inviting proportions give the library its enduring character. The building was enlarged in 1914, with original trustee Luther Weare serving as contractor. Today, the library remains both a working community institution and a treasured historic landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
